Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is a discipline that targets muscles; therefore, it has many benefits on the body. In addition to relieving muscle tension, massage therapy can also help reduce the effects of stress on the body.
- Lowers stress - The long-term effects of stress can take emotional and physical tolls. Massage therapy may relieve stress and conditions associated with it, such as tension headaches.
- Increase immune function
- Medical research indicates that massage therapy can help boost immune system strength by increasing the activity level of the body’s natural “killer T cells,” which fight off viruses.
- Boost mental health and wellness - Research suggests that symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression (all associated with mental health) may be directly affected with massage therapy.
- Manage pain -
Pain can negatively affect a person’s quality of life and impede recovery from illness or injury. Recent findings highlight the role of massage in pain management.
- Improve physical fitness -
Elite and recreational athletes alike can benefit from massage therapy - massage can reduce muscle tension, improve exercise performance and prevent injuries.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force - known as chi or qi (chee) - believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, your energy flow will re-balance. In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body's natural painkillers.
Physiotherapy
Corinne's approach is extremely diverse from her 20+ years of experience. All of her treatments include any mix of components within her skill set best suited to your issue and road to recovery including manual therapy, joint manipulation, exercise prescription, dry needling, medical acupuncture, myofascial release, CranialSacral Therapy (CST), visceral manipulation (VM) and more.
Please note that you do not require a physician’s referral to book a physical therapy appointment, but it may be required by some extended health care plans.
CranioSacral Therapy
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.
Few structures have as much influence over the body's ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And, the central nervous system is heavily influenced by the CranioSacral system - the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.
Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the CranioSacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.
Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, the CST practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the CranioSacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the CranioSacral system.
By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body's ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.
Somato Emotional Release
SomatoEmotional Release is defined by Dr. John Upledger, the founder of CranioSacral Therapy as: the expression of emotion that, for reasons deemed appropriate by some part of the patient’s or client’s nonconscious, has been retained, suppressed and isolated within the soma.
It is well-known in the world of CranioSacral Therapy that emotions trapped in body tissues can lead to pain and other ailments. Emotions have a powerful effect on our psyches, as well as our bodies. Positive/constructive emotions generate a sense of lightness and ease of movement. They can manifest as a desire to run, sing, smile and even dance. Negative/destructive emotions also generate body responses. They cause our shoulders to slump, our muscles to contract and our blood pressure to rise.
When we experience sadness, anger, resentment, loneliness or sorrow, we feel it deeply. And because it hurts, we sometimes suppress those parts of ourselves to keep the pain from intensifying or spreading. Imbalances often occur when we resist an emotion and its natural path through the body. Resistance can cause an emotion to lock into body tissue, eventually leading to physical ailments.
There are a variety of ways to release trapped emotions: journaling, talk therapy or even exercise. But the most reliable method of is SomatoEmotional Release (SER), that it was developed by Dr John E. Upledger. SER was designed specifically to release trapped emotions and allow the physical ailments that often accompany them to resolve naturally. The powerful results often include improved body functioning, loss of pain, greater mobility and more enjoyment of life.
Somatic Movement Therapy
The term somatic education was coined by Thomas Hanna. Hanna used the term somatic education to describe methods of sensory-motor education that use somatic movement to improve motor control and sensation and change learned muscular patterns. Many people find somatic movement education methods to be highly effective in relieving chronic pain, improving bodily function, and recovering from common musculoskeletal conditions.
SMT (Somatic Movement Therapy) helps you re-engage with the sensations of your body, release chronic muscular tension patterns and integrate your breath for deep relaxation. Ultimately, it facilitates an experience for profound physical and emotional healing through movement. A somatic movement, generally speaking, is one which is performed consciously with the intention of focusing on the internal experience of the movement rather than the external appearance or result of the movement.
Reflexology
Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet and/or the hands. The theory behind reflexology is that areas of the foot correspond to organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to the feet, hands and ears, is believed to bring relaxation and healing to the corresponding area/organ of the body, in order for a deeper level of healing to take place. Easing stress by connecting with acupressure points will leave you feeling extremely calm and rested. A beautiful therapeutic practice that can improve your body’s overall function and wellbeing.
Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Meditation/Yoga/Breath Work
Hot Stone Massage
A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy. It’s used to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body.
During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. Hot massage stones are heated to between 130 and 145 degrees.
The stones may be placed:
- Along your spine
- On your stomach
- On your chest
- On your face
- On your palms
- On your feet and toes
An extremely relaxing, yet therapeutic treatment.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
Lymphatic Massage aims to improve the flow of lymph fluid, which should reduce swelling in areas of the body where fluid collects and cannot drain away effectively. Therapy is applied to an unaffected area first making it possible for the fluid to move out of the affected area. Deep breathing techniques are often done at the beginning and end of the therapy session to help open the deep lymphatic pathways. It is not only extremely relaxing, but it helps increase movement of fluid toward the heart.
Astrology/Natal Chart Reading
An astrological birth chart - also referred to as the “natal chart” is technically a snapshot of the position of the planets in the sky on the exact day, time and location you were born. All these different points combine to create an astrological profile that’s uniquely you. An analysis of this chart can provide deep insight into your personality, motivations, challenges and desires.
